Nacque come "Bottiglieria del Leone" nella splendida "Casa veneziana" di piazza S. Babila che i milanesi, contrari alla Pace di Villafranca (seconda Guerra d'Indipendenza) dedicarono nel 1860 all'irredenta Venezia, che restava austriaca. Divenuto "Caffè Canetta" e poi "Donini", è da sempre punto d'incontro della bella società milanese, golosa dello storico aperitivo "Gin Rosa", creato nell'Ottocento col nome di "Costumé" e poi "Mistura Donini". Qui sono passati i più importanti nomi della Scapigliatura e tutti i sindaci di Milano.
