Run by the same family for three generations, this is the flamboyant "artists' café" in the Brera district, just a stone's throw from the Academy of Fine Arts. Painters Dova, Crippa, Tassinari and Treccani all had a permanent place and glass here. This was the venue for Piero Manzoni and Lucio Fontana, but also where Ungaretti, Quasimodo and Bianciardi came to mull over their writings. One of the first regulars, back in 1921, was the then editor of "Popolo d'Italia", Mr Benito Mussolini. One morning in 1922 he made his getaway leaving his bill unpaid: he thus became the first in a series of illustrious debtors.
